The first idea that comes to my mind when I think of American culture is uniqueness. Our culture is drastically different from so many others around the globe and those differences (some good and some bad) are what make our unique country what it is.
Culture is defined by The American Heritage New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third edition as "The sum of attitudes, customs, and beliefs that distinguishes one group of people from another. Culture is transmitted, through language, material objects, ritual, institutions, and art, from one generation to the next." American cultural traits are vast because of the diversity of its population. Key American cultural traits are outlined in the textbook Global Issues and Change by B. Johnson and J.S. Johnson they are listed as 1) Freedom, 2) Individualism, 3) Self-Reliance, 4) Achievement and 5) Pragmatism. All five of these characteristics have played an important role in the shaping of the American culture but the one that stands out the most is freedom. Without freedom none of the other characteristics would have developed. Freedom is what has made the entire American experience possible. The individualist idea developed as a result of the larger goal of freedom, they are offshoots of each other. Individualism requires a freedom of the individual, which was not possible under colonial rule where England took precedence over the individual. Furthermore self-reliance, achievement and pragmatism all were made possible by America's freedom.
Progress is what always has and continues to drive America both in business and its citizen's personal life. We are always looking for ways to improve a product, or develop a new one and similarly are always looking to improve our lives. Optimism permeates American culture, and is the motivating force for so many looking to improve their lives. A fundamental core to the American dream is that anyone, from anywhere, can be anything they want to be if they work hard and have the motivation to accomplish the tasks needed to reach their goals. Coffee Shop Culture in Singapore and Malaysia - A Different Art of Coffee Drinking

Before there are Starbucks, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaves, most people in the region of Singapore and Malaysia know only kopi, a Baba Malay language for coffee. Kopi is basically robusta coffee. Espresso and cappuccino are extravagant coffee in the early days, meant for the rich, and only available in hotels.
Today, a cup of espresso coffee or any other gourmet coffee still costs a few dollars, and a cup of kopi is only between 70 and 90 Singapore cents.
Latte or long black is unknown in local coffee stalls and kopi tiam. Tiam means shop in Hokkien, a Chinese dialect. Instead it is commonly called kopi, kopi-o, and kopi-c.
Kopi is not brewed in coffee maker, but steep in a tall metal pot with a long spout with a cotton coffee filter, a long cone bag, within. Milk and sugar are not served separately on the table. When you order your kopi, you have coffee with condensed milk, a sweetener, and sugar, already added.
Kopi-o is black coffee, with sugar added. O sounds like black in Hokkien.
Instead of condensed milk, Carnation evaporated milk is added to kopi-c, with sugar. The c stands for Carnation, a brand, even though some have replaced it with other brands.
Most of the early kopi tiam are started by Chinese who are Hainanese. Today their lingo still stays. Ask for kopi-c siu tai, it is coffee with evaporated milk and less sugar in the cup. More sugar, ka tai. But for no sugar, it is kosong, a Malay word which means nothing.
Sarabat stalls are coffee stalls run by Indians and Malays. They are famous for their teh tarik. Teh means tea, and tarik means pull back. A cup of tea with milk and sugar added is then juggled between two cups at an altitude. The original purpose is to lower the temperature of very hot tea for easy drinking on a hot day, for the climate in Singapore and Malaysia most of the year is of summer. However, the action has also produced a foamy top for the tea, much like cappuccino. This spurs the creation of kopiccino, using the same method but instead of tea, it is coffee.
Many migrants came from China in the old days. Chinese meal will always have a cup of Chinese tea besides their food. It is not surprising to find in the local coffee shop and food court, too, that coffee and tea are usually ordered together with meals, much like having a cup of Chinese tea, or ice water in western meal. But for some, hot kopi is still best reserved after a meal.
Nevertheless, for those who still crave for a piece of cheese cake with gourmet coffee, it is still Starbucks, hotels, or cafÃ©. For others with a budget, Ikea offers value for money for a cup of brewed coffee with cheese cake.

To many Majorca represents an invasion of young people, loud resorts, bars and crowded beaches but although that does exist it is only in one corner of this beautiful island just for a short period each year. On the rest of the island and for most of the year the picture is somewhat different. Beautiful countryside, mountains, beaches, and plenty of fine restaurants and cafes and of course a variety of attractions and cultural offerings to tempt visitors out and about during their stay.
Majorca has much more to offer and with influences from the earlier invaders such as Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Moors and Catalans there is plenty to see and enjoy for everyone.
Travelling to Majorca from anywhere in Europe is easy with hundreds of airlines providing cheap flights to Palma, the island's main airport, on a daily basis. The terminal buildings are spacious and modern, providing a perfect start to your break on this wonderful island.
Palma, the capital, has a wonderful Gothic cathedral overlooking the harbour. Work began on building the cathedral in 13th century and continued for another 400yrs with some final touches added by Gaudi in recent times. It is packed with interesting features including one of the worlds largest stained glass windows and the unfinished bell tower containing the massive 2 metre diameter N'Eloi bell weighing 5,700 kilograms.
Another Palma building with an interesting history is Castell de Bellver, also built during the same period and unique in Spain as it is completely round. Used for some time as a prison it is now a museum which traces Majorca's history through various artifacts.
Majorca has some fantastic beaches and coastal towns, one of the finest being Puerto Soller which can be reached from Palma on the old railway that winds its way over and through the mountains to the port. The journey from Palma takes about an hour and passes through 13 tunnels en route to the pretty port on the north west coast of the island. The longest tunnel is almost 3 kilometers n length and took four years to construct. Once a day the railway runs a special "Panoramic" special which stops at Mirador Pujol d'en Banya for 15 minutes to allow passengers to take photographs.
In the same area as Soller but up in the mountains, are the towns of Deia and Valledemossa. Deia was the home to English novelist and poet Roberts Graves who lived here for many years. Nowadays you are more likely to see film stars who stay in one of the two expensive hotels in the village. Valledemosa is famous for being the place where Fredrick Chopin and his lover Georges Sands came to from Paris when Chopin's health was in decline. Unfortunately Valledemosa and the weather were not kind to them as Sands recorded in her book about the period.
Traveling away from the Mountains and through the centre of the Island you will see fertile land with almond trees, windmills and vineyards. Some of the small towns and villages are so quiet you imagine they could be uninhabited and then you reach the east of the Island and its wonderful beaches. There are long open beaches such as those at Pollensa and Alcudia as well as many smaller resorts with tiny coves. Be sure to visit the Caves of Drac one of the most famous tourist attractions on the island or even the lesser known but just as impressive caves in Arta which contain thousands of huge stalactites and stalagmites.
Majorca is also home to a number of monasteries, some of which are located in impressive hilltop locations. One of the largest is the Lluc monastery located in the mountain region in the north west of the island surrounded by oak and cypress woodlands. The monastery now has it's own museum, restaurant and the Los Blauets school choir. Visitors may also spend longer enjoying the wonderful scenery by staying overnight in one of the monastery's 129 cells if they wish.
Whether you are a walker, cyclist, bird watcher, historian or just an inquisitive tourist there certainly is a lot to offer in the beautiful Island of Majorca.

Barcelona is known worldwide for its amazing nightlife (hundreds of bars, clubs and discos) and the wonderful cultural attractions. But another feature makes it even more unique: the beaches located just close to the city.
The city offers 4 km of good quality beaches, and sometimes the water is better than many other famous places both in Italy and Europe. Quite honestly, it is impossible to expect Caribbean beaches in Barcelona: the city holds 3 million inhabitants and is a lively, modern metropolis; as a result it is safe to say the beaches donâ€™t escape at least a bit of pollution, as to be expected.
The area that hosts almost all the beaches is the area of Barceloneta. Not so far from here lies the beach of Sant SebastiÃ¡, equipped with many showers, different services, assistance, tourist information and medical relief.
But the main (and most famous) beach of the area is known as Barceloneta and hosts a lot of comfortable appartamenti a Barcellona. This beach is also known because of the work of Rebecca Horn which stands right in the middle of the area. Both these two stretches of coastline can be reached by metro with the yellow line (L4), stopping at Barceloneta or Ciutadella.
Lovers of the naturist sea can find a space dedicated to their relaxation. The beach of Mar Bella is, in fact, the section devoted to this type of practice. The metro station, still yellow line, is Selva del Mar and from there is necessary a small one quarter of an hour walk. This stretch of coast is actually marked as a nudist naturist beach but actually we do not see many.
Coming down towards the Olympic City you can meet Nova IcÃ¡ria beach, characterized by many bars, restaurants and discos. How to Projectize People and Adopt a Project Culture

Many organizations are "projectizing" and developing a strong and effective project management infrastructure. There are challenges along the way, and a number of approaches. However, regardless of the approach, changing the culture to be aligned to formal project management will involve aligning people, one by one, by empowering them with formalized project management knowledge. To accomplish this, organizations can do well to develop a granular approach to empowering their people through this projectization process.
Background Projectization is a relatively recent phenomenon and is spreading rapidly. It is nearly synonymous with the idea, years ago, of electrification, where incorporating electricity into the physical infrastructure was taking place. With electrification, assets needed to be changed, thinking needed to be adapted, and people needed to be organized and train as part of a new infrastructure. While projectization is not so physical, it is part of the organizational infrastructure and demands the same amount of adaptation of thinking, organization, planning, and alignment, mostly of people.
Inputs Organizational culture is one of the first inputs to this longer term process of implementing change to a projectized organization. Organization size is a key consideration. Another is sophistication level within the industry, especially on the part of suppliers and customers. Another key input is the operational structure of the organization: matrix versus hierarchical, process versus project orientation, and more. Another important input is the current skill level from top to bottom within the organization.
Outputs Outputs of a projectization initiative will include greater alignment of projects with strategy and organizational goals, more purposeful implementation of projects, and more alignment of people. Another benefit may be increased ability to rotate people among various roles, producing cross pollination that helps bridge communication gaps. Other 'fallout' benefits are alignment of people around a common vocabulary and common set of concepts, more purposeful communications, and more aligned reporting.
Approach A 'layered' approach is a good start at thinking about how to inject projectization into the organizational culture. What I mean by 'layered' is that the organization can be segmented logically into groups that will require certain predetermined levels of knowledge and competency in project management in order to achieve projectization.
In an organizational breakdown, a first step would be to map a new project structure to the current organization structure. In all likelihood, it will need to accommodate portfolio level management of projects and programs, as well as management of the actual programs and projects. Where these might fall within the organizational structure will be somewhat unique in each case, but will provide an early picture that indicates some needs.
Next, it is important to identify the roles that all stakeholders will play within this envisioned project infrastructure. What roles, many of them new, will need to be supported, and what knowledge and competencies will be required. For each competency, there will need to be a strategy, and the overall strategy will represent an integrated approach across competencies. Examples of relevant competencies will include Progam Management, Project Portfolio Management, and Project Management. One strategy is to set up levels of competency within each of these roles, and these could include criteria related to experience as well as certification. Depending upon the organization, more specialty roles can be defined around other competencies such as construction management, IT project management, Business Analysis, Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), PRINCE2, and a myriad of other areas that might apply in an organization.
The key is to implement interaction and training for the various constituencies, and to make sure that training is aligned as a whole with organizational goals, and with the goal of feeding a projectized organization. Supplemental efforts can include training that helps smooth communication, collaborative sessions around achieving organizational goals, and unified awareness of stakeholder roles within the organization.
Measurement Measurement of success can be tricky, especially since this is not at the outset an easy thing to measure! My suggestion is to initially measure progress in training or any other metric that you can initially track. As the program unfolds, metrics will emerge for measuring organizational progress. Some examples off the top of my head include: meeting metrics, project success metrics, cultural alignment metrics, project completion metrics, and project portfolio effectiveness metrics. Because clarity will come over time, it is a good practice to acknowledge that and keep the measurement fluid and let it unfold over time.

If you want to get into the under-exploited fast-growing Spanish market, you need to know more than just how to speak Spanish. You need to understand Spanish customs, Spanish etiquette and Spanish business culture. Otherwise, you'll just be another American trying to "sell Spanish".
One of the most curious Spanish customs is the "mating ritual" all Spaniards go through when they first meet a new acquaintance or colleague. Basically they spend between three and fifteen minutes trying to find "common ground". They ask where the other person is from and they start there phrases with "Did you know..." or "I once worked with..." or "The last time I was in ...".
This act of "finding common ground" serves several purposes:

Tracing Filipino culture through art

The Ayala Museum is an Arts and History Museum in Manila, Philippines that celebrates the diversity of Filipino culture and the rich tapestry of its art. The museum was the brainchild of artist Fernando Zobel de Ayala y Montojo who envisioned a museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage of the Philippines. The Culture of South Austin

Austin has many colorful neighborhoods and shopping venues, but most inhabitants of the city will tell you that Austin is divided into two distinct areas: South Austin, and North Austin. The Colorado River runs directly through the central part of the city, encircling the downtown business district on its southern perimeter, and as is flows west, the river skirts the northern edge if Zilker Park and the Barton Springs area. The part of the river which flows through the metro area was recently named Lady Bird Lake, and was previously called Town Lake.
South Austin is thought of among Austinites as the laid back area of town; it is a very eclectic area, and most of the residents are thought of as informal, casual and very individualistic. South Austin has two main thoroughfares which attract restaurants, clubs and shopping areas. South Congress Avenue is one of these streets, which begins at the State Capitol Building a few miles north of the river, and ends a few miles south of downtown and eventually merges with Interstate 35, which is the primary north-south freeway in the Austin area. South Lamar is the other main thoroughfare, which runs the length of Austin, from its northern starting point where it begins, a few miles north of Austin at Interstate 35, to its furthest southernmost point, a few miles south of Austin, where it eventually flows into the freeway interchange at Highway 290 West and Loop 360.
Austinites refer to the shopping and entertainment area of South Congress Avenue as the SOCO area, and many world class restaurants can be found in SOCO, as well as numerous clothing stores, antique and retro shops, and also street vendors, selling a variety of reasonably inexpensive goods to pedestrians and other passersby. Once a month, the merchants of the SOCO district hold a street fair of sorts along the sidewalks outside the restaurants and shops called First Thursday, on the first Thursday of the month. The bridge itself has a pedestrian walkway on each side, both of which give pedestrians a beautiful view of Lady Bird Lake. The neighborhood of Travis Heights surrounds SoCo an is a collection of ecletic 1940's and 1950's homes.
One of the most unusual events in Austin is the nightly flight of the bats from under the bridge, where they nest, to the Austin skies right after sunset, a beautiful and very dramatic sight. Learn a new language by immerging into a new culture

I was challenged to learn a new language for the first time in school. As our education system requires, every student should learn two foreign languages. Depending on the school, the students were learning English and French (as mine did) some of them English and German, and some of them English and Italian. I loved English (can't say the same about French)!!! I tried hard to learn it. Believe me, this was a challenge in a class with 30 students and only one teacher! I learned mostly from books, reading and writing... and surprise, when the moment came to talk in English, I couldn't find my words!!! Did you have the same problem? I know many friends who had the same experience. Some of them learned English with a dictionary and phrase books, and some of them joined English classes. Few of them became fluent in the new language fast, but most of us... we were trying and trying really hard.
After many years, moving to India, I was forced to learn Hindi. A difficult language!!! Different sounds, different script, and once again learning from books did not work. I've tried for some time, and reached a beginner level. I was able to survive, but I wasn't content because of the inability to share my deep feelings and experiences with my Indian friends. Miscommunication due to the lack of language knowledge made life really difficult sometimes. In that moment I learned about OnSite Language Services, an immersion language learning program which helps English/Spanish speaking people to learn Hindi/Urdu and other Indian languages. Its motto is "Immerse to Converse", because they believe that immersion is the best way to learn a new language.
The principles of OSLS are natural, and yet I haven't thought about them! Let's learn as children do! What does it mean? Children learn through their everyday experience not through lessons; they acquire language which they need to use; they speak before they write and read. Through OSLS you become a child again; you learn to listen to the new language and to speak before you read or write. This does not mean that writing or reading is neglected, but the program concentrates on speaking. Being a community based language learning program, the students learn the new language mostly out in the community with natives or in private sessions with a language helper. This makes the relationships easy to build and learning culture a natural process. Of course, learning requires sweat, frustration and... humility: to recognize that you don't know everything, to accept that people will laugh at you and to persist in having embarrassing language contacts.
So, what did I learn from my language learning experience? I learned... how to learn! I learned that immersion language learning is the most efficient method to learn a new language... as long as you work hard!!!

It's a hard life. I'm sipping champagne on board a traditional Maldivian dhoni and watching the most beautiful colours hit the sky as the sun sets. For lack of better words, a perfect end to the day.
After four days of tropical honeymoon bliss it's easy to see why the Maldives is a favourite destination for honeymooners. You can't beat the tropical climate, clear blue waters and laid-back lifestyle.
I'm headed for the South Male Atoll, about a 30km boat ride from Male. Naladhu and Anantara Resorts are set on separate private islands and their lights twinkle a welcome at me as I'm dropped off at my first stop, Anantara Resort.

Spread across five acres of tropical oasis, Anantara has generous beachfront villas and over-water suites designed to complement the surrounding seascape.
The beachfront villas are elegantly furnished in soft tones that work with the custom-made teak cabinet and king-size bed. The attention to detail is amazing, and the first thing I notice as I'm shown into my villa are the rose petals on the bed with 'welcome' spelt out in grass letters.
From high-speed internet to a ready-made selection of island tunes to download on your iPod there's nothing that hasn't been thought of.
Anantara is host to a myriad of water activities including snorkelling, diving, kayaking, skiing and sailing. One of my favourite water sports, apart from snorkelling, is sailing a catamaran around the lagoon. Naladhu means 'pretty little island' which it certainly is, but what impresses me most are the 19 ocean houses dotted around the island's perimeter and facing the lagoon. Each house also has a private cabana on the other side of the island so you can enjoy a different view in peace.
Each house is huge, with all the mod cons you would expect from a luxury resort. The flat-screen TV, surround-sound Bose stereo system, private wine cellar and espresso machine are cleverly hidden behind brightly coloured curtains and antique wooden furniture.
From the king-size bed and generous glass-panelled doors to the outdoor veranda, dining pavilion and personal plunge pool, the complementary design of interior and outdoor spaces is genius. You can basically roll out of bed and into the pool. As an added luxury there are his and hers vanities complete with L'Occitane products, and an interior steam room to relax in after a long day of kayaking.
One of the best aspects of my Naladhu experience is my personalised 'house master' Asif who ensures I'm comfortable, settled in, and I know how to use all the facilities. He also organises room service, outdoor activities, private yoga sessions, restaurant bookings and spa visits with finesse.
A culinary journey

His experiences throughout Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia ensure a wide range of international fare is offered and reflects his obvious passion for quality cuisine. The Living Room is your only stop at Naladhu. The seafood platters and fish in particular are so fresh they melt in your mouth. You are spoilt for choice at Anantara with three restaurants; the Italian-inspired Terrazzo with impressive wine cellar and Fuddan Fusion Grill which combines contemporary dining and fusion cuisine. If you're looking for something a little more secluded, Terrazzo has a small outdoor terrace that is perfect for two. Five years ago, I was working for a large publishing company in New York City. I began each morning with two cups of coffee, a doughnut, and a cigarette, and that usually kept me alive until mid-afternoon when I'd order some take-out food that I'd eat at my desk.
After lunch, I was so tired that I'd take two diet pills (amphetamines) and more coffee just to get through the rest of the day. On my way home from work, I'd usually eat of couple slices of pizza and then drink whiskey until around midnight when I'd pass out.
I was twenty-four years old, overweight, undernourished, and addicted. As you can probably guess, my first experience with yoga was a disaster. I couldn't even make it through an entire class. I tried to lift my hands up over my head in a prayer position, and sweat dripped off my body as I gasped for air. I couldn't bend backwards, backwards, balance on one foot, or even sit up straight!
During class, I burped up French fries and alcohol, and it was suddenly obvious to me that the food I was eating was doing me more harm than good. I wanted to be lean and limber like the other students. I wanted to feel strong and energetic, and at the very least, I wanted to be able to touch my toes! I knew nothing about yoga, but after that first class, I knew I needed to keep practicing and I also new I needed to change my lifestyle.
About a month later, my girlfriend took me to a lecture about raw food nutrition presented by a man named, David Wolfe. The Grand Palace Enclosure

The earliest structures, in classic Thai style, date from the reign of King Rama I; extensive changes were made by later rulers of the dynasty, particularly King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who added a number of impres¬sive Western-style buildings to the collec¬tion. Of special interest are the Dusit Maha Prasat, an audience hall with traditional multi¬tiered roofs and an elegant, gilded spire; the Amarin Vinitchai Throne Hall, which served a the residence of the first three Chakri kings; and the Chakri Maha Prasat, contain¬ing the present throne hall, a basically Euro¬pean edifice crowned by three Thai spires.
The temple, known as Wat Phra Keo, houses the famous Emerald Buddha, a small, much-venerated image of northern Thai ori¬gin whose jewelled robes are changed three times a year by His Majesty the King at the beginning of each season. The main chapel, as well as the numerous buildings and monu¬ments surrounding it, are dazzlingly adorned by a profusion of stucco, gilded carvings, mother-of-pearl inlay, glass mosaics, statu¬ary, and other classic Thai arts. WatArun
Popularly called Temple of Dawn, this dramatic complex overlooking the Chao Phraya River on the West bank dates from the Ayutthaya period and, during the Thonburi reign of King Taksin, was briefly the home of the Emerald Buddha. In those days its central, Khmer-style tower was only 15 metres tall, however; the present 104-metre creation was started by King Rama II of Bangkok and completed in the following reign. Known as a prang, the tower represents the sacred Mount Meru, a heavenly realm consisting of 33 layers. Wat Arun is noted for its spectacular decoration, consisting of thou¬sands of pieces ofThai and Chinese pottery set in an intricate mosaic of delicate floral patterns covering almost the entire structure. Vimam Mek Palace
This magnificent palace, built entirely of rare golden Teak, was designed by a son of King Rama V at the turn of the century. It was originally intended as a place for the king to stay on visits to the island of Si Chang in the Gulf of Thailand but was moved while still incomplete to Bangkok. There it served for a time as the royal residence during construc¬tion of the nearby Dusit Palace. The octago¬nal building - reputedly the largest teak structure in the world - was restored by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit as part of Bangkok's Bi¬centennial Celebration in 1982 and since then has been open to the public. Vimarn Mek contains a fascinating col¬lection of Royal memorabilia, including old photographs, furniture, objets d'art, and such curiosities as a large copper bath and the first shower ever seen in Thailand. (Vimarn Mek is open Wednesday through Sundays, 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
Jim Thompson's House
This was the home ofthe famous Ameri¬can who came to Thailand as a military officer at the end of World War II and stayed on to revive the Thai silk industry as well as to form one of the finest private collections of art from Thailand and neighbouring countries.
The Thompson house, which he built in 1959, is actually composed of four complete old Thai-style teak structures and part of a fifth, artfully reassembled to form a single residence. The lofty, panelled drawing room, for example, dates from around 1800 and came from a community of silk weavers across the canal behind the house, while others were found in a village near A yutthaya. Some features, such as the enclosed stairhall and the modern bathrooms, represent departures from traditional construction, yet the essen¬tial Thai spirit has been carefully preserved.
The Weekend Market
For a comprehensive introduction to the real life of contemporary Thailand - its people, its culture, and its products both natural and man-made - few single places can equal the great public market held every Saturday and Sunday at Chatuchak Park. Here, late on Friday evening, thousands of vendors move in an amazing assortment of goods, and for two days the 31-acre area is packed with Thais of all classes in search of a bargain or just the pleasure of its colourful atmosphere.
Though mostly covered, the market can be hot for visitors and involves a good deal of walking, so wear your most comfortable clothes and shoes; plenty of open-air food stalls are scat¬tered around, however, offering a cool drink or a bowl of quick noodles for those whose energy flags. (The Weekend Market is open Saturday and Sunday, from dawn until nightfall.)
The Rose Garden
Located some 32 kilometres west of Bang¬kok on the bank of a picturesque river, this beau¬tifully landscaped park has a golf course, a modem hotel, and Thai-style bungalows for rent. Most people, however, go there for a day trip - often in conjunction with a visit to the nearby Floating Market at Damnern Saduak, -- and enjoy a few hours of strolling around the extensive gardens, eating in one of several restaurants, and seeing a cultural show performed every afternoon at 3 o'clock.
